Sweet, I received a gift in the mail from fellow blogger and all-around good guy GFV who is part of the crew over at Life in the Great Midwest.
Pheasant “Foofaraw” for tying flies!

Gerry and his trusty dog ‘Speck’ harvested some pheasants again this year and have been gracious enough to send me the goods (tailwings and such)…
Most fly-fishermen will tell you that pheasant ‘feathers’ are a ’staple’ for tying flies—and they are, at least for me anyways…Lots of “modified pheasant tail nymphs,” “modified carey specials,” “modified doc spratley’s,” etc…Actually, I usually go through about 20-30 of each of those specific flies every year…I go through even more when my ’students’ lose 3 or 4 an hour by snagging them on stuff (which is fine, it’s entertaining)!
I know Gerry appreciates the fact that the pheasants he harvested will also be used to harvest a fish or three…Gotta love it…
So, thank you very much Gerry (and Speck)! They will be put to use soon!
As one of your students, I have to protest…I’ve only ever lost like one fly! Ok, two…
Thanks for sending the feathers, Gerry! I can’t wait to catch some fish with my new flies that JJ is tying with them!!
Haha.
Heh, I’m going to tie a special batch of flies just for you jmac…(“these will work just fine for you today jmac”)
Haha!
If anything, these flies need to be better than average…because I need all the help I can get! Ha!
You’re welcome johnnyj. Would you post a photo or two of the flies you make? I fish my brains out with traditional methods but fly fishing has always mystified me. Good luck!
Hey, how cool is that?
Dfm-Pretty damn cool!
Gerry- Yeah, I’ll throw some flies up soon…Posting flies is something that I originally planned to do here at the blawg…
Hey! I never lost any of your flies…..I only lose normal fishing hooks. Can you really blame me? The log jumped out in front of me.
Em–You did great your first time and you caught fish! Success!
-Just ‘try’ to keep an eye out for those logs..
Cool story, cant wait to see the flies and then the fish!
