Gift from the Midwest…

Sweet, I received a gift in the mail from fellow blogger and all-around good guy GFV who is part of the crew over at Life in the Great Midwest.

Pheasant “Foofaraw” for tying flies!

mancave-011

Gerry and his trusty dog ‘Speck’ harvested some pheasants again this year and have been gracious enough to send me the goods (tailwings and such)…

Most fly-fishermen will tell you that pheasant ‘feathers’ are a ‘staple’ for tying flies—and they are, at least for me anyways…Lots of “modified pheasant tail nymphs,” “modified carey specials,” “modified doc spratley’s,” etc…Actually, I usually go through about 20-30 of each of those specific flies every year…I go through even more when my ‘students’ lose 3 or 4 an hour by snagging them on stuff (which is fine, it’s entertaining)!

I know Gerry appreciates the fact that the pheasants he harvested will also be used to harvest a fish or three…Gotta love it…

So, thank you very much Gerry (and Speck)! They will be put to use soon!

The Man Cave…

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve tied some flies and I’m definitely behind for the ‘usual’ amount that I tie every year (the ‘little lady’ is crackin’ the whip and wedding planning stuff is killing me)…

Now I finally have an ‘excuse’ for the ‘little lady’ as I conveniently received a ‘fresh batch’ of pheasant tailwings in the mail from GFV…

-“See dear, I can’t go with you to meet another caterer or florist, I need to tie flies before these pheasant feathers go bad, I’m behind!” –She bought it (she knows I’m full of shit though)…

So, down to the ‘Man Cave’ I go!

Yep, “The Man Cave.”  The ‘room’ in the house (basement for me) that a guy can make a mess, drink fine swill, crank Country and Rock n’Roll music, watch sports, tie flies and act like a jackass with his buddies…The only thing I’m missing is a foosball table…

Fellas, if you’ve been married for more than two minutes and tie flies you know about the mess and the smell of tying material, i.e, rotting capes etc.—Women DO NOT like this–at all…So, we get our own ‘special area’ in the house for these things…It’s a win-win if you ask me!

Every guy deserves a ‘man cave’ (the garage doesn’t count) that they can decorate any way they prefer…Sports stuff, fishing stuff, models in bikinis, etc…Afterall ladies, you GET the rest of the house to decorate…It’s only fair, I’m just sayin’…

The pictures here are “The View from my Bench” (where I tie flies)…The boys over at Buster Wants To Fish inspired this…They’ve been asking their fellow readers to mail in pictures of their fly-tying ‘bench’ and then posting them…Mine isn’t nearly as impressive as some of the ones that I’ve seen–Wow…

-I can’t say that I have a specific ‘bench’ for tying flies…I’ve always had my fly-tying stuff in ‘cases’ and ‘boxes’ that I can conveniently set-up wherever. You might notice a couple of large boxes on the bench in the pictures—-my ‘fly stuff’ boxes. I built them out of scrap poplar many, many years ago and they ended up weighing about 50 pounds each (ha)…They look kinda cool though…

Regardless, having the whole basement (man cave) to myself and being a guy rules…

Bootlegger…

This one really chapped my hide:

How do you raise money to clear a $6 billion deficit?  Well, if you’re (WA) Gov. Christine Gregoire you open more liquor stores! That’s her brilliant “plan” anyways…

b0687261-7ab1-4bcf-918a-b21b23cc3592_600

WHAT? How was this woman elected? (Never mind, I already know)…

The State doesn’t belong in the ‘booze’ business (or any business for that matter) yet I’ll bet you a double-shot of 80 proof that WA voters support it!..While we are at it, lets just let the state control all business…Yay socialism!

It doesn’t make sense for the State to hire more workers (pensions, benefits etc), pay for more property, overhead and grease the palms of dipsh1t politicians…Where’s the income to clear the deficit!?!? STOOOOPID!

This is from the WSLCB; the price breakdown for each bottle of liquor sold:

Distillery price: 25%

Fed tax: 16%

Mark up: 25%

State Tax: 34%

-Wouldn’t it make MORE sense to just leave liquor sales to private owners (grocery stores, etc) and collect the tax!? NOPE, the state needs to have its greedy little hands in YOUR pocket…and continue to spend more money…

I’m sure that the other states (CA) that have “non-government controlled liquor retailing” make a ton of money, create jobs and everybody (including the state) wins…

We can’t seem to figure out ‘free enterprise’ in Washington and that the state government is the enemy…Maybe that’s why there’s a $6 billion deficit…

And where’s the money for my gotdamn Husky Stadium upgrade, Christine!?
